Princeton University Unveils New Plan
Endowment Policy Princeton University revealed yesterday that it wants to focus its future construction along the Alexander Road corridor and on the periphery of 400 undeveloped university-owned acres that straddle Washington Road in West Windsor.

Selling Endowment That long-term land-use strategy represents a major shift in the way university officials had, until as recently as two years ago, envisioned developing the 400 acres the school owns in West Windsor between Route 1 and Carnegie Lake.

Endowment Mis Selling Previously, the university had designated that land as an area on which a twin major campus eventually would evolve in a manner similar to its existing campus in the Princetons, said Robert Durkee, the university's vice president and secretary.

Selling Endowment Policy "That is not our current thinking," Durkee told officials from the Princetons and West Windsor during yesterday's meeting of the circulation subcommittee of the Princeton Regional Planning Board.
In this context, Cabri 3D provides teachers and researchers a valuable tool to explore and discover new properties, new theorems yet to be unveiled.
Endowment Fund In part, that's because building a major campus on the West Windsor lands doesn't mesh with the university's goal of preserving its relatively tight, pedestrian-friendly design, Durkee said.
Tate continued to publish works of both poetry and prose for the next five decades, including The Mediterranean and Other Poems (1936), Selected Essays, 1948 (1948), and The Swimmers and Other Selected Poems (1971). He also taught at various universities and colleges, and from 1939 to 1942 he stayed at New Jersey’s Princeton University as the poet in residence. He then went on to work at the Library of Congress, edit the Sewanee Review, lecture throughout Europe, and teach at New York University.
Lilly Endowment University officials want to concentrate their academic buildings and undergraduate housing in a region close enough for a 10-minute walk to the Frist Campus Center on Washington Road, he said.
Endowment Mortgage Uk That means the school's West Windsor lands between Route 1 and Carnegie Lake would be more suitable for some mixed-use development to support the university's educational mission.
Endowment Plan Mortgage "We'd like to do that along the periphery of those lands, preserving as much of the interior of those lands as possible," Durkee said after the meeting.
Endowment Mortgage Complain Precisely what that development would entail or how much building will take place over the next 20 to 30 years is something university officials haven't established yet, Durkee said.
Sell Endowment But their plan for at least the next 20 years includes no construction of academic buildings, undergraduate housing or significant commercial development on the university's 400 acres between Route 1 and Carnegie Lake, Durkee said.
Endowment Mortgage "We are not at all thinking about classroom space over there, or undergraduate dorms over there," Durkee said.
Endowment Funds Possible construction could include housing for university faculty, staff and graduate students, research labs, cultural and athletic facilities, administrative buildings and perhaps some small-scale service businesses, he said.
Sell Endowment Policy Commuter parking garages are another element the university might include on its West Windsor lands near Alexander Road, said Jon Hlafter, the university's director of physical planning.
College Endowment A large but yet undetermined percentage of the university's West Windsor parcel north of Route 1, including the frontage along Washington Road and Carnegie Lake, would remain free of development.
Endowment Mortgage Plan The construction would take place, however, along the parcel's western, southern and eastern edges, which are Alexander Road, Route 1 and Harrison Street, Durkee said.
Modified Endowment Contract The Alexander Street-Alexander Road corridor likely would be the most intensely developed part of the plan because of its proximity to the NJ Transit Dinky rail line that links the Princeton Junction train station to Princeton Borough, university officials said.
Endowment Surrender If the university implements its long-term plan for the West Windsor lands, it would make sense to create a third transit stop along that rail line somewhere between Route 1 and Lake Carnegie, Durkee said.
Traded Endowment Policy "So much hinges on what the future of that Dinky line is," he said.
University Endowment Such a stop could be either a train or a bus-rapid transit station that would almost be vital if the university were to build commuter parking garages nearby, university and several municipal planning officials said.
Endowment Shortfall Although many of the long-term changes at the university will take place on its West Windsor lands, there will continue to be plenty of renovation and new construction related to university property in the Princetons, Durkee said.
Traded Endowment One change could be to realign University Place so its T-intersection with Alexander Street is shifted south of the pedestrian crosswalk on Alexander Road at the Wawa in order to ease traffic flow.
Duke Endowment "I think we're finally getting our arms around their plans for the future," Princeton Township Deputy Mayor Bill Enslin said.
Endowment Buyer "Our concern was really that the development on the West Windsor lands (would have) had more commercial potential, but it appears not to be the case," he said.
Endowment Claim But Enslin expressed some worries about the risk of increased traffic along Harrison Street if the university builds too much of its property close to that street.
National Endowment For Borough Mayor Joe O'Neill reserved judgment on the university's long-term vision regarding its West Windsor lands.
Based Carnegie Endowment "In essence, this new master plan takes pressure off of Washington Road but then places it on Alexander and Harrison," O'Neill said.
Endowment Insurance "It is interesting that, in effect, the university has a peripheral plan," he said. "It's not necessarily that it's good, bad or indifferent, it's just different than what we've thought about before."
Harvard Endowment West Windsor Council President Kristin Appelget, who did not take part in yesterday's meeting, seemed open-minded but cautious afterward to the university's vision for its 400 acres in West Windsor between Route 1 and Carnegie Lake.
Endowment Compensation "I don't think West Windsor had presupposed any sort of specific development on that site," Appelget said. "I don't think that there has ever been a grand plan of what we assumed would take place on that property.
Detective Endowment "Certainly, we'd be concerned if there's housing in which a lot of school children are brought," she said.
Endowment Enormous West Windsor Mayor Shing-Fu Hsueh also said it's too early to judge the university's plan.
Endowment Sale "Conceptually, I think, it's reasonable, but the devil is in the detail," Hsueh said.
