Park Commission Sees Opportunity In Duke Rezoning

Endowment Policy The Somerset County Park Commission is hoping the rezoning of the Duke Estate in Hillsborough will play right into its master plan.

Sporting 1800's Sue Carr, (800) 9566, Clumber Park, the estate of the Duke of Newcastle. The foundation stock, it is said, was given to one of the English dukes in the mid 18th century by a French duke. The heavyset retriever became the favorite of several British kings who tended to be heavyset themselves. They couldn't keep up with faster Cockers, Springers and Field Spaniels but the steady plodding Clumber suited them fine.

Selling Endowment The Hillsborough Township Committee approved a zoning change to allow a cultural and tourism facility on 1,235 acres of the 2,704-acre estate of the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke.

Also making their series debuts this season are new regulars Alexandra Wentworth and Twist (aka Leroy Casey), while Steve Park has left the series for new career opportunities.

Endowment Mis Selling The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, owners of the estate, plan to create a cultural center with offices, research facilities, a hotel, restaurant, tennis courts, golf course, visitors' center, a performance area and gift shops. The new zoning area includes the botanical gardens, waterfalls and landscaping that are open for seasonal tours.

You'll have the opportunity to earn 15% percent in commissions on sales originating from your web site.

Selling Endowment Policy The foundation plans to preserve and incorporate the renowned landscaping into the cultural center plans, thus opening the grounds to the public. The rest of the estate will remain zoned for agriculture.

Endowment Fund Raymond Brown, director of the Park Commission, said he is hopeful the Duke Foundation's plans will coincide with the Park Commission's master plan -- which includes preserving the greenway along the Raritan River and creating public access to the estate grounds.

And youngsters from the local schools have already been invited along to help plant a herb garden. Cllr Andy Connelly, "This is great news. Our parks and green spaces staff work closely with local communities to get them involved and interested in their parks." "And by getting the local primary school involved as well, there is a fantastic learning opportunity for local children. I want to congratulate the Friends of Gwendolen Gardens, our parks staff and the local children for making this scheme a success".

Lilly Endowment "The Commission and the Duke Foundation have the same goal -- to preserve the greenway along the Raritan basin and to increase public access," Brown said. "It's something we ought to do."

Endowment Mortgage Uk He said the Park Commission and other county representatives will be meeting with Foundation officials later this month.

Endowment Plan Mortgage "Our immediate interest is the river corridor and creating a trail that accesses both sides of the river," Brown said.

Endowment Mortgage Complain Currently, a county park trail passes through Raritan and terminates at the Nevius Street Bridge. Brown said it is the Park Commission's hope to extend this trail along the south bank of the Raritan on the Duke Estate.

Sell Endowment "We'll talk to them on how we can continue that down the river."

Endowment Mortgage "We're going to have some conversations with them," Freeholder Rick Fontana said. "We want to work with them the best we can."

Endowment Funds James Buchanan Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company and Duke Energy Company, began developing the property that would become the estate in 1893. The woodlands and farmlands were transformed with nine lakes, 45 buildings, more than two miles of stone walls and more than 18 miles of roads. But the center piece of the estate was the botanical gardens with 35 fountains and numerous sculptures.

Sell Endowment Policy Duke died in 1925, leaving the estate to his 12-year-old daughter Doris. She continued to add to the botanical gardens, which she opened to public tours in 1964. Later she would add to the size of the estate by purchasing several farms bordering the property.

College Endowment Doris Duke was an active philanthropist and known as a world traveler. She was married twice, once for only a year.

Endowment Mortgage Plan She died at the age of 80 in 1993. Duke had named her butler as co-executor of her estate, but he was removed from this position after being cleared in an inquest over her death.

Modified Endowment Contract The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has managed the estate since.
