Committee to Call New Pastor by End of Year
Committee to Call New Pastor by End of Year
Date 2/27/1997 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsPresident Baker has appointed a campus ministry call committee to fill the vacancy left by Norene Smith's departure for Bayshore Lutheran Church in Whitefishbay, Wisc. The committee, chaired by Jim Martin-Schramm, assistant professor of religion, includes Ruth Kath, professor of German, Pam Torresdal, director of the counseling service, Martin Dale, multicultural coordinator, Sandra Peter, instructor in music, and two members of the Luther Congregation Council, juniors Jenise Chalfant and Bill Richardson. The committee hopes to begin decision-making in late March, with the goal of completing the process by the end of the school year.
A flier has been sent to the bishops of all 65 regional synods, as well as to the presidents of every ELCA college, university, and seminary, announcing that the committee is searching for "an energetic, personable ELCA pastor to join the pastoral team leading Luther Campus Ministry. The College seeks someone whose enthusiasm for the Gospel and concern for individuals will enrich campus ministry as a catalyst for college-wide interest in Christianity and as a spiritual resource for students, faculty, and staff."
The committee has already received nominations from faculty and regents, and expects to receive more before March 21. After that date, the number of applicants will be narrowed to about ten individuals who will be asked to submit further material. The list will then be narrowed to three or four finalists.
According to Martin-Schramm, the committee plans to bring these three or four to campus in late April or early May to see the campus and meet with students. The committee will then rank the candidates and make a recommendation to President Baker, who will make the final hiring decision.
When asked if the call committee is particularly searching for a female to replace Pastor Smith, Martin-Schramm said, "We're looking for the best pastor we can find, but we have enjoyed a gender complementary here and we'd like to have that again."
Students who wish to contribute input to this calling process may contact either Bill Richardson or Jenise Chalfant.
