Grant allows for new program and revision

Endowment Policy A two million-dollar grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. has resulted in A Sense of Vocation. This is a new program that encourages present, past and future members of the college community to reflect on their vocation.

Selling Endowment Mark Z. Muggli, professor of English, heads the program, which will be on campus for the next five years.

Endowment Mis Selling "There are two main objectives of the program," said Muggli. "The first is the All-Student Vocation Program which encourages serious thought and reflection on the sense of call. This division of the larger program asks students to try to relate their beliefs and faith to decisions that shape their lives both now and further on down the road." The All-Student Vocation coordinator is Liang Chee Wee, registrar and associate dean for advising.

Selling Endowment Policy The primary focus of the All-Student vocation program is the advisory program. "Over the next five years we hope to transform the advisory program, which does not mean new advisors or a brand new program, but a transformation to a more holistic, fruitful and thoughtful advisor/advisee relationship," said Muggli.

Endowment Fund The second objective is the Church Ministry Vocation Program, which places a bigger emphasis on students who sense that they might have a call to service in the church. The Church Ministry Vocation coordinator is Ruth Kath, professor of German.

Lilly Endowment "The hope of this program is that it will draw people together from many different perspectives who are asking the question, 'What am I called to be, to do,'" said Pastor Mike Blair.

Endowment Mortgage Uk Each campus pastor is involved in an aspect of the vocation program. Pastor David Vasquez is working on a summer program for prospective students, and Pastor Deanna Langle is working on a vocation program that is directed at woman interested in joining the clergy.

Endowment Mortgage Complain One aspect of the general program initiatives is program visitors. Scheduled throughout the 2002-2003 school year are activists, directors and educators who will be spending from an evening, a week, or a month on campus interacting with students, faculty and staff, promoting the vocation program.

Sell Endowment Since Sept. 18 Sheila Radford-Hill, community activist, church leader and scholar has been on campus meeting with students, classes, and various campus organizations. Radford-Hill will be on campus until Oct. 20.

"I have never participated in a program like this. This extended time has been an excellent opportunity to reflect on my teaching and to improve my practice. Endowment Funds Lisa Geissler ('04) had Radford-Hill speak in her Poly-Sci 47 class, Intro to Social Policy. "She spoke about welfare legislation and the different acts that have gone through. She showed us a movie called 'Legacy' which was about a housing project in Chicago. We learned that that was where she had grown up, and that she knew the people we were watching."

Sell Endowment Policy Out of the endowment, fifty thousand dollars has been budgeted a year for five years for student fellowship grants.

College Endowment "Fifty students have received financial aid scholarships to help support them while they work at various church camps or in churches and also for seminary visits over the past year," said Connie Barclay, program secretary. Financial Aid scholarships are one thousand dollars, and the vocational grant for seminary visits is $250 a year, for as many visits as one would like.

Endowment Mortgage Plan "The vocational grant allowed me the opportunity to explore my seminary options and make the best decision for my future," said Ryan Beeman ('03). "It really helped to visit Iliff (a seminary in Denver, CO) because you are in the seminary environment and you get a better picture of what life is like, if the place is really for you." Beeman was one of five students who were awarded the $250 grant.

Modified Endowment Contract According to Muggli, "the Lilly Endowment gave us two million to help us become what we've always wanted to be."
