Enjoy a night of jazz with Regina Carter

Enjoy a night of jazz with Regina Carter

Date 3/13/2002 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & Culture

Ready to be exposed to the world of jazz? The Regina Carter Quintet will bring a cultural blend of jazz, funk, blues and soul music to the CFL on Sunday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Carter is one of the most innovative jazz violinists to emerge on the jazz scene in decades. Being described by Yvonne Kuhlman, director of Campus Programming, as "a dynamically eclectic musician," Carter has been notably busy over the last three years.

"There has been an explosion of visibility and interest in her and her music," Kuhlman said.

She has collaborated with such diverse artists as Wynton Marsalis, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel and Dolly Parton. She has won acclaim for solos on Marsalis' "Blood on the Fields" tour and Wilson's recent "Travelin' Miles" concert at New York's Lincoln Center. With her regular band, Carter has released "Motor City Moments" and "Rhythms of the Heart" albums under the Verve Records label.

With the lack of clubs within the Luther area, exposure to various forms of jazz is limited, making the concert a risk-free chance to experience something new and exciting.

"Who knows, you might discover something," said Kuhlman. "Students should take advantage of what the Center Stage Series has to offer, because after college life it isn't easy to attend such performances financially."

Carter hails from Detroit, where she began studying the Suzuki method of violin in grade school. She trained classically as a member of the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra and under the guidance of trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and organist Lymon Woodard. Carter performed in multi-ethnic formats including the pop/funk band Brainstorm and the all-female Detroit collaborative Straight Ahead.

A graduate of the New England Conservatory and Oakland University, Carter moved to New York in the early 1990s. She burst quickly onto the music scene, collaborating with Oliver Lake, the String Trio of New York and others.

In 1995, she recorded her self-titled CD for Atlantic Records and in 1997, "Something for Grace" helped her place first in the violin category in Down Beat magazine's annual Critics Poll.

The Luther College performance of Regina Carter Quintet is a Heartland Arts Fund Program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Iowa Arts Council. Tickets are now on sale at the box office.
